"Art creates democracy"
Art has the power to change societies, and this is precisely what the project "Art creates democracy", which was launched by the MeetFrida Foundation (D) in cooperation with the Kunstfest Weimar (D), demonstrates. On the occasion of the state elections in Thuringia (D) in September 2024, the project sends a clear signal for democracy, freedom, diversity and dialogue.
Project content
During the state election campaign, an artistic, performative intervention will take place in public spaces. Traditional large-format billboards will be repurposed and replaced with artworks that convey clear messages in favour of a democratic society.
OPEN CALL & SELECTION PROCEDURE
An "open call" was launched for the project, in which regional and national artists with a connection to Thuringia (D) were able to submit their works. By 30 April 2024, numerous submissions had shown a wide range of artistic and creative forms of expression. From these submissions, a jury selected three artists (shortlist) whose works were particularly convincing due to their artistic relevance and originality. These works will be displayed on STRÖER billboards throughout Thuringia (Germany) during the state elections.
Due to the high quality of the submissions, the jury decided to also give five other artists (longlist) the opportunity to present their work. These works will be exhibited in the library of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (D) as part of the Weimar Art Festival (D).
